Parker University Celebrates National Nutrition Month

One of the greatest blessings to celebrate in life is undoubtedly one’s good health! Understanding what your own body does and does not need in the form of food and nutrition is a critical component of maintaining and extending the longevity of the life you love.

It’s March! (AKA National Nutrition Month)

In addition to regular workouts, getting good sleep, eating clean and healthy, etc., countless factors work behind the scenes to drive a person’s overall health. Every March, a nutrition education and information campaign is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. National Nutrition Month focuses on making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. National Nutrition Month started in 1973 as “National Nutrition Week” and evolved into a month-long observance of growing interest in nutrition.

While every shape and size of junk food is ever-present in our fast-food-paced world, this year’s theme for National Nutrition Month is “Food Connects Us”. Think about it – food often connects us to cultures, our families, friends, and food and libations are regularly the spotlight of social gatherings. We get in such a rush that we sometimes fail to appreciate the nutritious food options readily available.

A little effort is all it takes to see the changes you want to make to your health. You may need to start asking more questions about your diet. How was this dish prepared? What are the ingredients? If you slow down, you realize that any meal provides the opportunity to learn about its preparation, who made it, where ingredients were sourced, etc. Aspects like health, traditions, seasons, and ease of access are factors that forge our mindsets and relationship with food.

Considering the impact food has on every day of our lives, throughout March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics presents how waste, budget, schedule, plant-based eating, and more can directly impact your overall health. This initiative provides a refresher course in fixing healthy snacks, eating breakfast, portion sizes, activity levels, nutrition labels, safety guidelines, water, supplements, and so much more!
