Parker University is excited to introduce a new member of the campus security team – Parker, the university’s first-ever security dog. With his distinctive bright blue eyes and gentle nature, Parker is more than just a security asset; he’s a beloved figure on campus, bringing both safety and smiles to students, faculty, and staff.
Parker University’s Head of Security, Pete Peterson, saw an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between security and the university community. Inspired by other universities and police departments that successfully implemented K-9 units, Pete envisioned a way to make security officers more approachable while enhancing campus safety. After thorough research, Pete decided a Great Dane would not only serve as a visible deterrent to potential threats but also as a gentle giant for students to engage with.
Pete picked Parker from a litter of 25 puppies in Denison, Texas, at Hundeity Great Danes on March 18, 2024, when Parker was just three months old. What stood out most? Parker’s striking blue eyes. Originally named Rocky, it became clear that Parker responded much better to his new name—fitting for the university he now represents.
Parker’s training has been nothing short of exceptional. Under the guidance of renowned dog trainer Stan Smith, owner of Iron Sharp K-9 and winner of America’s Top Dog (A&E, 2020), Parker completed seven weeks of obedience training. Stan’s expertise, combined with the strong bond between Parker and Pete, ensured that Parker excelled in his training. Parker will continue his journey with protective training early next year, making him even more equipped for his security role.
To celebrate Parker’s successful completion of his obedience training, Parker University hosted a graduation party on September 5, 2024, at the Parker University Student Activity Center. Faculty, students, and staff came out to support their new furry friend. The event featured a video recap of Parker’s journey, a demo from Stan Smith, and, of course, a special “puppy cake” for Parker from Three Dog Bakery. Parker was awarded his obedience certification, presented by Parker University President, Dr. William E. Morgan.
Making an Impact on Campus
Parker has quickly become a campus favorite, not just for his role in security but also for the joy he brings to everyone he meets. From students petting him during study breaks to his appearances at school events, Parker helps relieve stress and lifts spirits with his friendly and affectionate demeanor.
In addition to patrolling the campus with the security team, Parker serves as a bridge between security officers and the campus community. His presence encourages students to engage with security personnel, fostering a safer, more connected environment.
As Parker continues his journey, the university is excited for the future. His upcoming protective training will further enhance his capabilities, and the campus looks forward to the many ways Parker will continue to contribute to the Parker University experience.
